It's just a basketball jersey...not a wife!

hey everyone, kali mera from greece! for those of you not up on your modern greek that's good day! it is the end of our second day here and we just got back from dinner, it's almost midnight- dinner here is not an early affair and not a quick meal either...it is meant as a time to discuss and socialize! we got here yesterday at 11am, unfortunately the metro was on strike so we had an hour and twenty minute bus ride with standing room only! let's just say it was an adventure and that we got many stares for being the group of "crazy americans" on the bus!!! we went on a walking tour last night before dinner and saw a monument of some relatively unimportant ancient greek but the view was amazing, you could see all of athens with the sea on one side and mountains on the other and a mass of white houses and buildings in between.

today wake up call came at 7am and sight seeing began at 9- we began by walking up to the acropolis- and i do mean up! its a little bit of a hike! lol, it was "unusally" busy (or so we are told as we are acropolis newbies)...luckily, we got to skip the lines because we are now archaeology students with the american school here in athens!!! and our teacher is an official tourguide- we are told this is a big deal! a few greek tourguides even stopped us to ask for his paperwork proving it! after exploring the acropolis we went down to look at the theaters around the acropolis and sat on their incredibly comfy marble seats! haha, we are hoping for the ancients' sakes they had cushions especially since we are told the athens were known to have skinny, bony asses (teachers words not ours!) after that we had a break for lunch so we went to a greek taverna with some of the other students and then we got delicious gelato- yumm!!!

after lunch we went to the new acropolis museum and got to see some of the statues that were originally on the acropolis or in the parthenon, some of these are just temporary casts while they wait for great britain to return the artafacts they "stole"- its a huge debate among archaeologists and countries as to who rightfully owns the statues- the greeks naturally think they do, and since we are currently in their wonderful country we are inclined to agree!

after the museum we came back to the hotel and had an hour to do as we please and then we met for class from 7 to 8 and then left for dinner at 9:15 and now here we are, blogging in our hotel lobby! we will try to write more about the wierd and wacky things we experience and keep you updated on what we are seeing and learning!

in case your interested....the title of this blog comes from a very enthusiastic greek working at one of the many tee-shirt souvenir shops along the plaka who was trying to talk one of us into buying a michael jordan jersey- we thought he made a few valid points including our title, however, no jersey was bought!
